Backing up my Statement

Since Mike disagrees to the point of insult:
I said Japan is a USA wannabe, while this is an exaggeration I have
seen more Westerners in ads than real life here, I have seen Ingerish
everywhere, even replacing Japanese, Western style and media are
copied to the point of hyperbole and Kanazawa is supposed to be the
cultral centre of Japan.
That is not to say Japanese culture is dead, just not as strong as it
was. I suggest watching The Last Samurai again.

  1. Interesting. It might be similar in Mumbai & Buenos Aires too - going by the name of "cultural imperialism".
Ingerish is a weird & interesting thing. Some borrowed words from French & German too, I understand - 'baito' from 'arbeit'(job or work), pan from 'pain' (bread), etc. Maybe it's because we're English speakers that Ingerish jumps out at us -
And then there's always those twelve years of occupation by American troops, too, though that's before your classmate's time -

Here's a funny site by a guy who collects misuse of asian characters in Western culture - especially in tattoos -
